Light Flyweight Division     Weight: 105-108

History

The beginnings of the lightweight division can be traced back to 1738, when it was introduced by the father of English boxing, Jack Broughton. At that time, any fighter weighing less than 160 pounds was considered a lightweight

.

When New York legalized boxing in 1920, the law stipulated a “junior flyweight” class with a weight limit of 99 pounds. The National Boxing Association (NBA) also recognized this weight class. However, the NBA later withdrew recognition of the junior flyweight division.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) decided to resurrect the light flyweight division in the 1970s. The first champion in this division was Franco Udella, who won the WBC title in 1975. The World Boxing Association (WBA) also crowned its first champion in 1975 when Jaime Rios defeated Rigoberto Marcano via a fifteen-round decision.

The weight limit at light flyweight in professional boxing is 108 pounds. This division provides a platform for skilled fighters who bring speed, agility, and precision to the ring. The light flyweight division has a rich history, and its revival in the 1970s added excitement to the world of boxing. Fighters in this weight class continue to showcase their talent and determination, proving that greatness comes in smaller packages!
